Spring time is among us and usually this time of year means cleaning out the garage, our attics, and our homes in general. But I am here to remind you that you should add your business to this list! Cleaning out your business is just as important so you can reset and recharge to serve your community and grow your business!
If you have been putting off cleaning out your business, or event worst, never have cleaned out your business.. I've got some great tips for you!
1. File Refresh
As a business owner, you most likely have endless amounts of files and folders saved either on your desktop or cloud-based services. I usually go through all my files and organize them into their appropriate folders once a month. BUT, yes there are some months that I totally either forget or put it off. This is the perfect time to sit down and tackle all those loose files that are roaming around your computer.
Remember to sort through your downloads folder, trash bin, as well as any non-frequent folders as those pile up the most files over time!
2. Inbox Clean Up
I am guilty of it, 100%! My inbox at times is terrifying! Do you sometimes have 300+ unread emails in your inbox, just sitting there?! You know, those that you tell yourself that you will get to tomorrow...
Make it easier on yourself and create a filing system for such emails. Create folders for all the different categories that you need. Heck, even create subfolders!
Similar to your files on your computer, go through your emails in your inbox and folders to do a full clean sweep. Recognize the emails that you NEED and throw away those that are just junk at this point.
3. Revive your Notes
Are you like me that has a whole folder or app full of notes, thought-starters, amazing ideas, or email drafts?!
Use this time to sort through all those notes and drafts- purge the ones that are irrelevant and create folders for those that you need to keep. Develop a folder system to organize your notes by categories so they are easier to find when you need them!
Now this step is not only for that Notes app on your phone, this goes for your notebook, planner, desktop notes, Evernote, etc.
4. Reassess your Subscriptions
I know I'm not the only one that gets gypped on auto-renew app subscriptions! You know, the ones that offer a trial or you actually want to use it for 1 month, they give you the notification that it will renew 1 year from now.... the next thing you know, its a year later and you have a renewal charge!
Take this time to go through all your subscriptions: apps, magazines, softwares, etc. Determine which ones you really need / use for your business and which ones you can do without.
5. Rejuvenate your Website
If you're anything like me, the idea of going through my website to check for broken links, update content, add new photos, etc well... just sounds exhausting!
Do not worry! I have developed a few quick steps to make this tasks less daunting!
I first check for any broken links since this is a BIG no-no. Free tools such as Dr. Link Check is a great way to find out quickly if you have any links that you should update.
I usually then just scroll through my website and check for photos or content that should be updated -- seasonal photos, off brand content, new services available, etc. This is crucial because you of course want to make sure your website reflects exactly what is offered.
6. Refresh your Social Media
For as much as we are on social media, they tend to get SO cluttered!
Do you have endless amount of old DMs that you do not engage with?
Do you follow a good chunk of accounts that you don't connect with or are relevant to you?
Go through your account and start unfollowing accounts that do not add value for you and your business, delete old DM threads that are just taking up space and update your profile bios to keep them relevant!
Now, I know this was a lot to ask of you, BUT honestly take a day or a few hours a day and focus on concurring some of these areas in your business. I promise you will thank yourself down the road for keeping yourself organized, updated, and refreshed!
